How many stitches does a modern sewing machine have? For the first hundred years, the sewing machines only had straight stitches. Today, sewing machines are very different. Today there are whole sets of stitches including, decorative stitches, alphabetic lettering, utility stitches, and over casting stitches. Today sewing machines boast twenty to a thousand different stitches. Most machines enable variations of length and width.

Sewing machines are not all the same. Even sewing machines that look alike, can be very very different. Sewing machines vary in the stitches they offer as well as how they make those stitches.

Mechanical sewing machines are the least expensive sewing machines and use the most primitive technologies. An AC electric motor turns a belt which turns the upper sewing machine shaft. The upper shaft transfers the mechanical energy along the shaft past the cam system to the needle system. A lever on a parabola connection transfers the mechanical movement down to the lower sewing machine shaft which may be split into a dual lower shaft one to drive the hook and a second to drive the feed dogs.

Then you see levers that rub against or run along the edge of this large gear. This motion conveys this motion to the needle bar enabling the bar to create a variety of stitches.

Sew one seam across the top of the piece about an inch down. Drop down another inch and sew a new seam using a different stitch. Continue down the piece until the piece is complete. Start another piece and continue sewing all the different stitches of until you have a sample of every stitch on your sewing machine. Finally, seam the collection of pieces together into your own stitch book.

Leonardo of Pisa, better known to us today as Fibonacci first introduced what we call the Fibonacci sequence to the west in his 1202 book Liber Abaci (the sequence was already known in Indian mathematics). He stumbled upon this sequence while attempting to estimate how many rabbits he would be able to breed in one year based on his knowledge of their breeding habits. This mathematical model is used by Forex traders today.

While many think of the Fibonacci sequence as a mathematical abstraction, it is grounded in a real world application. The Fibonacci sequence can be used to predict patterns which would not otherwise be apparent.

How can this be applied to investing? Very astute investors understand that there are hidden patterns in the stock market--based on the mass of investors' behavior. "Buy low and sell high" and "The best time to buy is when there's blood in the streets" are but two investment aphorisms that not only work, but also come from understanding hidden patterns of the investment markets.

Hidden patterns of investment marketing cannot be seen up close. There is no accurate sense in trying to predict the hourly or daily fluctuations of investment markets. However, overall extended trends very well can be. Increased profits are taken advantage of when investors and Forex traders confidently use the number sequence of Fibonacci to reach their gains.

The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which each successive number is the sum of the two previous numbers. So it goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, and into perhaps infinity. There are a number of interrelationships held within these numbers; for instance, any given number is approximately 1.618 times the preceding number, and 1.618 happens to represent the ancient Greeks' "golden ratio"--considered to be the supreme essence of balance (and balance is the ultimate key to successful investing).

Of all the Fibonacci series the two applications in wide spread use by Forex traders and investors are arcs and retracements.

Fibonacci chart technique involves three curved lines drawn for anticipating key resistance and supporting various levels as well as areas of ranging. First drawn is an invisible trendline between the two points of high and low for particular period of time. Next, three intersecting curves are drawn overlapping the trendline at the levels of 38.2, 50, and 61.8 percent according to Fibonacci. When the price of the asset crosses through these key levels, decisions of transaction are made.

Now, a retracement, in investing, refers to a reversal in the movement of a stock's price--a reversal which is enough to counter the stock's prevailing trend. Advanced successful investors pay intense attention to retracement possibilities and patterns. The Fibonacci retracement analyzes the likelihood that a financial asset's price will see a larger than average retracement and then come to support or resistance at the key Fibonacci levels before it then continues on in its original direction. A trendline is drawn between two extreme points; then, its vertical distance is divided by the key Fibonacci ratios of 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, and 100%.

Traders use Fibonacci retracements to determine strategic points for placing their transactions, target prices and stop-loss points. There are other tools which use retracement techniques, chief among them Elliott Wave Theory, Gartley patterns and Tirone levels.

The "Fibonacci formula" is used in investing for the simple reason that it works. Forex traders especially seem to find huge success from using it.

Exploring the 4 Property Rule

Portfolio lending is becoming increasing popular. One of the reasons for this is portfolio lending is not restricted to the horrific 4 property rule. Through a portfolio lender, it is possible to acquire a multitude of mortgages. However, those looking to procure loans through entities such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will run into the 4 property rule wall.

It is obvious that the $750 billion bailout did not do a thing to free up capital. And now the 4 property rule is a slap in the face to all real estate investors. In fact, this particular rule is a complete rejection of the principles that our capitalist society is founded on. In my opinion, the 4 property rule is designed to put real estate investors out of business. Just when the government should be inviting us to participate in the economic recovery.

So, what specifically is the 4 property rule? Essentially, the new rules of conventional lending state that a person will be limited to four financed properties at one time. Again, this is a thoroughly absurd rule that undermines many benefits of real estate investing. Basically, if you are limited to only four financed homes, you can not flip property in vast numbers.

And, as an investor this includes your primary residence! Again, this rule does nothing to help real estate investors. It is simply protectionism. And, as we all know, protectionism usually backfires. It does absolutely nothing to help the market and overall economy. Instead, the 4 property rule can significantly weaken the economy.

For example, prior to the current economic meltdown, many legitimate investors took advantage of skyrocketing real estate values. They would purchase properties at low prices and then sell high. In some cases, real estate investors would purchase significant volumes of property for resale. Some investors would purchase literally dozens of properties for resale. The profits derived from this wholesaling had an enormous benefit on the overall economy.

That is, in the absence of the 4 property rule, the sale of massive volumes of real estate would yield a number of positive effects. For example, the revenues generated could be invested into the stock market. Once invested, it would provide liquidity to many different companies. It would also generate significant tax revenue to the state and local governments. And, of course, the wealth created by this multiplexing of real estate sales would greatly expand purchasing. This would improve the economy in other sectors of the market. With the onset of the 4 property rule, all of this would cease and much of the economy could be undermined. Hopefully, this rule will eventually be revoked and return a more free market approach to the world of real estate.

Then again, regardless of whether or not this rule is revoked, portfolio lenders are not restricted to such a rule. If you wish to seek massive financing, a portfolio lender is the lender to visit.

Appraisers Not Fudging Numbers - No Help for Reverse Mortgage

I received an email a few days ago from a prospective customer. I say prospective loosely because I'm quite sure he won't become one.

He completemented me on my fine job of marketing to him as a lead-in to what he really wanted. He said, "how can you get me the most money out of my home, compared to another lender."

There is actually no way to do it another way. All of us in reverse mortgages use the same formula to establish the cash amount that can be removed from a loan.

So he asks me to use an appraiser that really does a "good job". Of course this is code for an appraiser who fudges up his numbers to make the loan or transaction work.

His reasoning behind this is that a bigger loan will be handed out if there is a higher report of home worth.

With home values reducing he is in the same shaky boat as many senior mortgage holders. They want to use the reverse loan to rid themselves of the burden of the monthly payment.

If the appraisal doesn't come in high enough the reverse mortgage company can't, in many cases, lend enough to pay off the borrower's forward mortgage. The end result is the guy is stuck with that payment until values come back.

Unfortunately borrowers aren't the only ones struggling; appraisers are as well. For awhile they were able to pad their appraisal reports.

If you are a strict rule following appraiser, the above statement might tick you off a bit, but come on, it is general knowledge this practice was occurring.

Presently everyone in the housing industry is being held responsible for the mortgage debacle, appraisers too. A closer eye is being kept on them than previously.

Appraisal audits are more frequent than ever and appraisers are running the risk of losing their license if business is not conducted as it should.

So, that is what I told this guy. I haven't heard from him since. I told him other companies would tell him how their appraiser will definitely get him the greatest value.

Most lenders will promise it, but won't do anything differently when it comes down to it. I choose to let seniors know all the facts and risk losing them as a client.
