Successfully Running Your Own Business

By Craig Calvin

Statistics show that the vast majority of new businesses fail within the first few years. That fact doesn't seem to discourage those with the entrepreneurial spirit, however, as new business are opening every day. And many of them are able to keep their doors open, some even are making a profit. With the challenges placed on us by the economy, finding and keeping a job is more and more difficult. So those who are so inclined are taking matters into their own hands and opening their own businesses.

When starting out in a new business, it is easy to get discouraged. Operators need to stay focused and never give up hope. Though it sounds hokey, hanging motivational posters in your work ares actually does work to keep you focused. If you quit, then you'll never get there. Building name recognition is very important. Advertising is generally considered too expensive and is one of the last things budgeted, but it is one of the most important line items and should not be overlooked. There are inexpensive ways to advertise, but they take a little bit of creativity. Try sponsoring local events such as youth sporting events. Place ads in small local papers. Or even do a television commercial, to be shown in the wee hours which won't cost near as much. You would be surprised at the large number of people who tune in to tv after midnight. PBS stations also have much lower rates.

The internet is also a great place to advertise. Try posting ads at some of the popular online classified ad websites, or advertise your website on message boards and discussion forums. Whatever you do, however, try not to get annoying with your advertisement and start spamming people. Not only is it annoying, but it is illegal and it can end up costing you a lot of cold, hard cash.

No matter how well your business does, keeping clear financial records should be the most important thing you do. You will need to maintain information for reporting purposes to a variety of agencies. If you do not have the skills or time to keep your books, then possibly a family member or friend can give you some guidance.

It takes an inherent desire and sometimes a little bit of craziness to open a business, especially in today's world. But with determination and an open mind, success can be achieved. No matter what type of business you open, staying true to your goals will help you be the success you've dreamed of.
