Eat Smaller Portions To Stay Healthy

by Patty Cocchiarella

Many experts suggest that people should eat more vegetables and fruits in order to create a better diet. There are indexes like the Food Pyramid or the Glycemic Index that helps people cut calorie but many do not talk about the fact that portions also have to be under control.

When you read popular magazines they tell you that the age old way of losing weight is to eat smaller portions; instead of putting two scoops of mashed potatoes on your plate only put one and see how that works.

People are also encouraged to eat six small meals a day instead of two or three big ones. All of these methods help some people lose the weight they want. If you practice this you will not be hungry throughout the day because it also boosts your metabolism.

Portion control is important because most people eat way more than they need especially when they are at a social gathering. Also, there are many different ideas as to what a portion looks like. As an example, what comes to mind when you think of a four ounce serving of meat? This is not easy to get a picture of because most people do not go around measuring their food.

If you need to control your portions sometimes it helps if you have something you can use that can show you visually what you need to do. As an example, an individual who has diabetes or has had bariatric surgery may have small measuring cups and other types of measures in order to help them see the portion correctly.

Some people have found that by using a Meal Measure they can more readily see the portions and stick to them. This is a handy device that takes the guess work out of making portions because it has them all properly measured.

Portion control is a lot easier today because there is so much information about what you can eat and how you can prepare your food. You can still have something delicious without stretching your stomach to its limits.

Children can sometimes be the most vulnerable when it comes to having to eat more than they need because they are often pushed by well meaning family members to continue eating once they are full. The bottom line is if you control your portions and stay within a good weight range, you will be healthier.
