Rhinoplasty - What Is Involved?

by Seth Bairdtruzzeli

People who are unhappy with the look or shape of their noses, or who have difficulty breathing normally often develop an interest in rhinoplasty. If you're among them, you need to learn about this procedure before you step into it.

Rhinoplasty gives you the ability to change many different thing about your nose, from size and width to the profile, and the position or size of your nostrils. Rhinoplasty can reshape the tip of the most, fix asymmetry or oddly shaped nostrils, and correct breathing difficulties, whether they're inborn or accidental.

This term refers to all surgical procedures that reshape the nose, and it's often called a nose job. However, even with all that can be done, there are still many important things to consider before having this kind of procedure.

Before you have any surgery, you'll have to quit smoking, and you'll have to avoid food and drink for six to twelve hours before your surgery. Some medications may have to be discontinued, too. This helps you avoid complications related to the procedure.

You have to tell your surgeon about herbal supplements, vitamins, and drugs you're taking, any health conditions you may have, or your daily activities. Be sure you discuss even the things that don't seem important.

Rhinoplasty is among the top five cosmetic surgery procedures, and has a long history of success. However, you could still suffer from some side effects, from bleeding or infection to nasal obstruction or an undesirable appearance after surgery.

Rhinoplasty is divided into two basic types - primary and secondary. These are then divided into open and closed procedures.

Open rhinoplasty is used for major reshaping of the nose, and incisions are made in the piece of skin between the nostrils. Then, this skin is pulled up and off of the structure of the nose so the anatomy is clearly visible.

Closed rhinoplasty is used for more minor reshaping, and does not require as severe an incision. A secondary rhinoplasty is usually done to correct problems from a previous primary surgery.

Filler rhinoplasty is another type that uses filling agents to remove depressions, rather than cutting away tissue. Parts of the nose can also be augmented with cartilage from other areas of the body.

If you want a surgery of this kind, you need to talk to your surgeon about whether or not you're a good candidate and what kind of expectations you have. Bring photographs of what appeals to you along to show the surgeon what you want. You may also need to have other procedures performed at the same time to create facial balance.

The procedure itself will probably be performed on an outpatient basis, and can take as little as fifteen minutes or as long as several hours. Local anesthesia with some sedation or general anesthesia are usually used for this kind of procedure.

It takes a while to recover, and you may not be able to breathe through your nose for the first twenty-four hours. Pain medication will be used for about two days, and you may experience nausea.

For the first few days, bleeding is common, and cold compresses and head elevation is important. Don't allow your nose to be traumatized, and use decongestants instead of blowing your nose.
