Best Time to Plant Your Vegetable Garden

by Lucille S. Groth

A common dilemma for those new to gardening is the best time to plant vegetable garden outdoors. The answer is as simple as determining the best time to plant for the climate where you live. Those who want to know a particular date for planting their vegetable garden are out of luck because a specific planting date cannot be provided. The planting date will depend upon the weather.

Bear mind mind, however, that even the finest gardeners can lose some plants because of unexpected frosts and early winters which they also had not expected. Gardening can very much be a process of experimentation, but if it is done the right way, it's very much worth the effort.

Planting guides for vegetables will state that if you're growing any spring vegetables, you must plant them during late winter. Summer vegetables must be planted in early spring--after the final frost--while fall vegetables must be planted in mid-to-late summer.

Spring vegetables are best to be planted during temperatures that are around the 50 degree mark. Summer vegetables are safe in the 60 - 70 degree range. There are specific vegetables that are identified as warm season and cool season vegetables. Frequently these descriptions can be perplexing to people. It is crucial to note that these descriptions don't particularly pertain to the season of the year, but the weather that the vegetables can flourish in.

Vegetables like onions, peas, salad greens, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower, have the ability to flourish in low winter temperatures, even though it is not advised. For many people, starting out a vegetable garden with early spring vegetables can be a better choice.

Vegetables like eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, melons and squash, will perish rapidly if you attempt to grown them in weather that is less than 50 degrees. The only method you can use to maintain these plants outside is to shield them with a plant protection apparatus such as a cloche or cultivate them in a greenhouse.

Warm season vegetables grow best after the last frost and should be finished growing before your first frost. Learning about the dates of the first and last frost in your area is vital. Instructions and recommended planting zones are usually listed on seed packets that you can buy from any garden center.
