By Sue Thompson

Three months of strained bowel movements is a definite sign that one is suffering from constipation. This condition is often not taken seriously, however there may a grave reason behind it. The average person moves his bowel at least once a day while sufferers range from once every 3 days to only once a week.

What are the signs that tell me I am constipated?

If your stools are hard and dry and you have difficulty eliminating, then you are constipated. Also, your bowel movements are infrequent and spread out over a few days to a week and you have to strain to expel, sometimes even experiencing pain.

Why do people get constipated?

People get constipated for many reasons both minor and serious. A simple lack of exercise can be the cause but it may also be a serious disorder such as colon cancer or irritable bowel movement.

Some causes of constipation:

Stress of any kind

Too much consumption of dairy products

Insufficient fiber intake

Hemorrhoids

Is it advisable to take laxatives?

Practice caution. If taken regularly laxatives can even worsen your condition by causing your colon to weaken and by numbing your internal parts.

What is the best way to treat constipation?

A fiber rich diet combined with natural medication is a surefire way to treat chronic constipation. However, if such natural approaches do not alleviate your condition, then it is best to consult with a medical professional. Your constipation may be a symptom of a more serious disease.
