Portion Control Tips for Eating Out

by Patty Cocchiarella

It happens all the time. People get tired of eating at home, or they don't feel like cooking so they want to go out and eat. For an individual who is on a special diet or who has to control what they eat it can be a daunting task to keep track of what they want to eat. Most people say the heck with it and just eat what they want. This may not be the best way to deal with the situation.

Portion control can be a pain sometimes, and you might hate to deal with it outside your house, but if you want to stay healthy it is a good idea to adopt some simple ways of controlling portions while you are out. Here are a few tips to help:

Learn to eyeball your portions at home. If you know what your portions look like at home it is easier to understand what they should look like when you are out. If you have problems doing this a great product to help is the Meal Measure because it does the work for you.

Stay with a healthy mindset. Keep your mind from wandering onto topics that don't help you. Instead, keep a pleasant outlook and know that portion control is keeping you healthy.

Order from the children's or seniors menu. In many cases you can eat from these special menus that are automatically smaller portions. Tell management that you need to control your portions and this is the best way you have found. Most restaurants will understand.

Stay away from "all you can eat" buffets. These are the most difficult places to control your portions. You will have a tendency to eat more, just because it is available.

Tell friends ahead of time of your dietary needs. When friends invite you over let them know that you watch your portions so that they will not be offended when you eat differently.

Keep fruit handy everywhere you go. This will make sure that you have something to eat that is healthy and nutritious. This is a great way to make sure that you don't do unhealthy snacking in between meals.

When you are working on portion control it does not have to be a problem for you if you follow good guidelines. These tips will help you get started, and then you will be able to find new ones on your own.
