Severe Hemorrhoids Explained

by Heather-Jane Hunter

Inside the anal canal are cushions which fill with blood to control bowel movement. When these become stretched due to too high blood pressure or too high volume of blood they become hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can vary a lot in regard to the pain they cause. They generally dont become a serious problem until severe pain is caused. Hemorrhoids are relatively common in the general population with 1 in 20 people suffering and around 50% of people sufferer from hemorrhoids at some point in their lifetime. Hemorrhoids are most common in people between 40 " 65 years of age.

Excessive pressure on the pelvic and rectal blood vessels is what causes hemorrhoids (as mentioned above). An accumulation of blood builds up in the veins causing them to swell and stretch. Near by tissues are also affected by this stretching. Diarrhea can aggravate hemorrhoids and constipation causes straining which is the most common cause of excessive pressure which leads to hemorrhoids.

People who are obese or overweight are at a higher risk of getting hemorrhoids. Women who are pregnant are also at a higher than normal risk due to increased pressure on veins in the lower half of the body. Hemorrhoids can sometimes develop due to straining which is required during labor.

Types of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are divided between internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. Both can occur at the same time and the severity of each will vary depending on a wide range of factors. 4 grades of hemorrhoids exist with 1st degree hemorrhoids being the least serious and 4th degree being the most serious. Both external hemorrhoids and internal hemorrhoids can bleed on occasions.

Hemorrhoids that are classed as 1st degree are always inside the anal canal, they never protrude. 2nd degree hemorrhoids however can protrude, most likely during bowel movement, but they always return to the anal canal without assistance afterwards. 3rd degree hemorrhoids require manual insertion once they protrude. 4th degree hemorrhoids can no longer be inserted.

Symptoms in Severe Hemorrhoids

Severe hemorrhoids have the same symptoms as those that arent severe. The main difference is that severe hemorrhoids will be much more painful. Burning and irritation are also common along with blood on the stools and toilet paper. The anus may prove more difficult to clean than normal.
