Qualities that Qualify Obese People for LapBand Surgery

by Jason King

An accepted form of treatment for obesity is lap band surgery. It is not a simple fix, and it is not for those who just need to shed a few pounds.Need to have their insurance company pay for all or part of the cost and there are strict requirements for those who wish to become a candidate for lap band surgery. These requirements were developed in the 1990's by the NHI, National Institutes for Health, to safeguard the general public from attempting drastic measures where it is unwarranted.

Like most stomach surgery, lap band surgery is just as risky. When a person fulfills the criteria set for such a procedure the advantages are considered as more important than the risks involved.

The requirements for a candidate for lap band surgery are a BMI (body mass index) of at least 35-39. This is a category of morbid obesity that is dangerous to many aspects of health.

There are other considerations when you start thinking about lap band surgery as the way to solve your problem. BMI's of between 35 and 39 make you at risk for obesity health related issues including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Simply having a BMI over 40 is adequate justification for surgery, even in the absence of other conditions.

Using the above requirements allow insurance companies who consider paying for expensive weight loss surgeries such as the lap band procedure decide whether or not they will pay. Certain insurance companies will, through the terms of service, refuse to cover any surgery for weight loss, in spite of acquiescence to the NHI principles.

Deciding to go it alone and pay for the procedure out of your own pocket is a huge decision. The NHI standards were formulated to ascertain genuine medical need. With major surgery you must meet criteria otherwise the dangers outweigh benefits.
