What's Popping in Iowa

By Qandishah Brown

If you are in Iowa then one thing that you will discover is that corn isn't all that ordinary. Aside from the fact that this state is a major producer of this crop you will find that corn is taken seriously over here. It's amazing what they have been able to do with that simple thing that we don't really think about. Corn goes beyond being eaten in Iowa; all the possibilities to ensure its use are exhausted.

What ends up in our popcorn buckets in the theaters or the dining table steamed and buttered, starts out from a tiny kernel. If you break it down, you end up with four major components of corn- starch, protein, fiber and oil. All these can be used separately. Go to your local supermarket and you'll find that there thousands of products which list corn components in their ingredients. However there is more to corn than just being in food.

Among the many uses of corn aside from being food is being a component for other products. You will find that it can be used to run your car or an engine. Ethanol can be produced from corn and used to run engines. The same ethanol can also be use in the production of carbonated drinks and dry ice. Who would have thought all this could come from corn. Even the chicken that we eat is raised on corn grains.

Who knows what else corn can do, or what other uses it has. It can go into the production of textiles, rubber tires, cosmetics and even plastics. Now we know why those in Iowa take their corn so seriously. There is so much profit to be made from it with all the things that you can do with it.

Visit the next Iowa craft fair or festival and you will surely find something that has been made out of corn; whether it's some yummy corn muffins or recycled paper made from its fibers. If you know a thing or two about crafting then you can very well try your hand at joining these craft fairs as well and making money through them.
