Making Fashion Statements On The Beach

By Randy James

When the sun is out and surf is up, it signals the time for everyone to hit the beach and enjoy a great day out by the sea. Whether one is looking to surf, having a swim near the coast, or building sandcastles with the children, the beach offers an almost endless variety of activities that can be enjoyed by both the individual and the family.

It also means that there are essential items and apparel that one needs to bring along for the occasion. This might include surf boards, swimming gear or pails and spades for the kids. You would also need to be suited up with beach wear such as swim wear, goggles and the other related clothing items.

An attire that is increasingly being worn by many is the board short. Its popularity has gone beyond that of surfers and on the beach. You can now spot a boardie being worn by many people in shopping malls or out on the streets. It has gone on to become a mainstream fashion piece for people of all ages and sexes.

The rise of the board short as a fashion statement can be seen most clearly in the wide range of brands that have incorporated it as part of their product lines. Volcom, Billabong and Roxy are just one of the few popular surfing apparel brands that feature them prominently. They even have their own seasonal launches.

There are now swimsuits for women that are more of a fashion item than just for a dip in the pool. Ladies look out for the latest releases from famous designers. They do everything within their power to not only fit into these daring bikinis or one pieces, but to look good at the same time.

Wearing sunglasses or visors has also become part of the get-up on the sandy coasts. While some might be doing it for practical reasons, others want to be seen as part of the 'in' crowd with a pair of cool shades. It is no longer unheard of for someone to spend a few hundred dollars on a pair of Ray Ban or Oakley shades.

A pair of sandals is also viewed as necessary since it helps to protect the feet from any foreign objects. Fashion followers have put a new spin on beach footwear though, choosing colorful designs from diverse brands such as Crocs and Rip Curl. They help give new meaning to the term 'total fashion'.

The fine line between fun at the beach and fashion has blurred considerably. They have become synonymous with each other and no one baulks at being well dressed despite going for a surf. So why not be part of the crowd and make your own individual fashion statement and have fun at the same time?
