Indexing of Your Site.

By Irmin J. Roybal

If you need your site listed in search results, you need your site being indexed by search engines. Therefore, timely and thorough indexing of your site is a key condition to success of your online business.

Site Indexing can be achieved in two ways. You can directly submit your site to search engines (or use submission services, often provided by web hosts). Or, you can just wait while robots from search engines will reach your site. Robots can come through links from other sites. While direct submission will never hurt your site, getting a visit from a robot in a second case often is even more beneficial. In this case your site may get higher rating just out of the fact that if someone gives a link to your site, than it is worthwhile being linked.

The time required to get your site indexed can vary from couple of days to several months. Your site indexing can be substantially accelerated if there will be links to your site from other sites of high page ranking. Google is the fastest indexer on the Internet today.

Indexing of newly added pages happens faster, if the site having a frequent updates. In such case engines may consider such fast growing/updating sites up-to-date and useful for users, and hence, assign them some priority on indexing.

Here are some tips, which can help to get faster indexing to your site:

- Any page of your site shall not be more than three clicks away from the main page;

- Build a map of your site with all inner links. Post a link to the site map in your index page.

- Avoid making large pages, the size should not exceed 100 " 200 kB. Robots rarely crawl further than such size.

- Avoid complex parametric URLs in your links as much as possible, such links make indexing slower. Indexing-friendly links are also human-friendly, i.e. they must be easy readable for humans.

- Use robots.txt file in order to pass indexing instructions to the robot.

You can monitor the indexing process of your site using logs on your hosting server or through corresponding listings on search engines. Also, keep in mind that the number of indexed pages of your site can change suddenly due to various reasons: changes in search engine algorithms, shot-down of linking source, unavailability of your hosting server, etc.

Good luck on your site indexing!
