Are You Finding It Hard To Locate A Good Treatment For Your Acne?

By Donald Saunders

Each day literally thousands of individuals call into a drugstore looking for an over the counter acne solution. In the drugstore they are faced with almost countless options to choose from and it is hard to decide just where to begin. So, let's look at the commonest types of acne treatment.

Millions of individuals suffer from acne and the condition does not care about your race, gender or age. This means than many acne researchers are in something of a quandary when finding a treatment which will work on everyone. In fact they have yet to find one so selecting an acne solution for the huge variety out there frequently leaves acne sufferers in the drug store scratching their heads.

In order to pick an acne treatment it is useful to have some background information on just what acne is and what causes it, as well as information about your particular form of acne. You should consider visiting your dermatologist or doctor to find out what they recommend by way of treatment. Normally this will be more effective than randomly selecting an over the counter solution that you are uncertain about.

To find the best acne medication for you you need to know that there are essentially two approaches which you can choose from to help with controlling your acne. The two most widely marketed product groups contain either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and while both are formulated to combat acne they work quite differently. Benzoyl peroxide for example works as an antibacterial killing off the bacteria which are known to give rise to spots while salicylic acid exfoliates the hair follicle helping to prevent clogging of the hair follicles that can lead to spots. Both treatments react with your skin differently so it is helpful to consult your doctor before beginning one or the other.

At the drug store you might also see acne kits. Acne kits are simply conveniently packaged sets of different products that can be used to help fight and control your acne. Usually, they will include a face cleanser, a topical gel or cream and a lotion that helps with irritation and stops your skin from drying out. In the majority of cases the active ingredient used in these products will be benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, together with other acne fighting products.

No matter what product you select the important thing to remember is that you should only use the treatment as directed. If, having tried your chosen treatment for a reasonable period of time it not working to your satisfaction then it is time for another trip to your dermatologist or doctor to reevaluate what you are using. Sometimes, it might take a number of different treatments to find one that works for you and your specific acne problem.
