Choosing a wood Boiler Heating System

by John Kron

Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are an old technology that is coming back into vogue in many places. The basic technology works like this: In a shed far from the house, you put a wood burning furnace which heats the water in a water container. Both the furnace and the water vat are insulated to keep the heat in. The heated water is then transported across the property, usually the yard, through pipes. It heats the house and the water that gets used inside it.
Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are becoming popular because they burn wood and utilize water, rather than using fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, or coal to provide warmth. Wood, of course, is a renewable resource; even if it takes trees a while to grow, you wont run out of them. After the expense of putting in the outdoor wood boiler heating system, you wont have gas bills anymore, and your electric bills will be cut significantly.

Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are used most often by people who live in rural areas. In some regions, these areas arent serviced by gas or electricity, but wood is plentiful and easy to come by. It has also been true in the past that wood boilers produced a lot of smoke, so the only people who could realistically use them were those who had no close neighbors to be bothered by it. However, new technologies in wood burning furnaces and boilers have significantly reduced the amount of smoke new appliances make, so outdoor wood boiler heating systems may soon be used much more widely in suburban areas.
Another big advantage to an outdoor wood boiler is the capability to heat several buildings at once with the same heating system. This is most applicable to farms and acreages, but might be used by businesses and homes as well. The multiple building heating system would require underground piping to each building, such as the residence, barn, work shop or garage.

Even with all its advantages, there are some things you need to consider carefully before investing in an outdoor wood boiler heating system. Some of these include: You have to go outside to put wood in the stove. If you dont like to go outside in the winter, or if youre not fit enough to walk across your property and carry wood to your shed, this might not be the best choice for you. You have to have some place to store the wood. Youll need a lot of wood, especially in the winter.

Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are a lot of money up front to install. It will be a few years before they start to pay for themselves, although monthly heating bills will be lower immediately. A lot of people have decided it is worth it to switch to a wood boiler heating system.
