You absolutely can't go wrong by deciding to give the special girl in your life Valentine's Day flowers. If you're thinking that flowers are played out and won't be appreciated, just look at the past 300 years and you'll see flowers are the most widely gifted Valentines Day Gift ever. Here where I live in Tucson, flowers are loved, but hard to find. It's desert after all, and the only flowers we have here are cactus flowers and maybe a few scraggly wildflowers that don't bloom very often. The internet is definitely the best place to choose from hundreds of beautiful bouquets and arrangements, from roses to lillies to orchids and more.
Using history as a guide to look at other types of Valentines Day gifts may help you find alternatives to flowers, but believe me, flowers are number #1 in most womens' hearts...
I'll give you zero guesses as to what's the most popular Valentines Day flower. Roses, of course! I've heard that in other countries, other flowers are the top choice for Feb 14th, but here in the USA roses are king, especially pink and red ones. Who can argue with 300 years of tradition in gifting flowers? Well, actually you don't have to be totally in line with tradition - you can easily pick different color roses, like fire and ice, white, yellow, or even choose other flowers like orchids, lillies, tuberoses, alstromeria (I don't know what they are but I like the name), etc. If you live in Tucson, flowers here are limited to a few 1 day bloomers that live on cactii, but online there are gazillions of choices, and beautiful ones, too.
Tucson flowers won't cut it for Valentines day, so I suggest you shop online at the link below.
From all the flowers I've talked about, not all will come in every color. Don't be surprised to see some strange new colors for 2009, because plant biologists have been manipulating plants for a long time. Ever see fire and ice roses or blue roses? From what I've been seeing, blue, yellow, and purple seem to be this year's top flower color choices. Honestly, the best thing to do is to know your woman as best as you can. You know what colors she likes from talking to her... At least I HOPE you do. If you give her flowers, and they happen to be one or more of her favorite colors, then you've got a winner.
Want to know the best way to figure out what kind of flowers your significant other will like? Take her to a flower shop NOW and see what she likes and doesn't like. That way, you'll know directly what she's in to. Tell her they're for a co-worker who's sick or a co-worker whose grandmother just passed. You'll win bonus points for showing her your compassion too!
Now that you've decided to get her flowers, think about the last few details. Is she someone who likes a small arrangement, or is she big and bold and likes big beautiful flower displays that are huge? Maybe she loves a particular kind of flower, like orchids. For some women, particular flowers remind them of family, or love, or their childhood. See if your woman has any of these associations and buy what she'll see deeply into. Remember, the more thought you put into getting her just the right flowers, the more she'll go bananas and jump your bones when she gets them.
