Pregnancy can be a scary time in our lives. There are times when we find ourselves asking the question "Can this possibly be normal?". When we see a strange discharge during pregnancy we tend to freak out just a little bit, or even a lot. There are times when this discharge can be a legitimate concern, however the majority of time it's nothing to be concerned about.
* Blood
Bleeding during early pregnancy can be very scary, in fact, bleeding is scary in general, pregnant or not. Any bleeding during the first trimester is a reason to call your doctor as it can definitely mean trouble. However the most common type of bloody discharge during pregnancy comes after sex. I hear this question all the time and the answer is always the same, "Yes it's normal!" Your cervix is very temperamental during pregnancy and sexual activity can cause some light bleeding or pink discharge.
Call or go into your doctor's office IF:
*You have bleeding in the first trimester
*If you have bleeding that is accompanied by heavy cramps or contractions.
*You are wearing a pad that is full of blood in less than an hour
*You have bleeding for a long period of time (more than 24 hours)
* White, Lumpy Discharge
Even if you have had a yeast infection before pregnancy, it is a new ball game now that there is a baby inside you! A normal yeast infection will cause a thick, white or yellow, foul smelling discharge during pregnancy. Another symptom of a yeast infection is itching or burning of the labia and/or vagina. You CAN use a yeast infection medication such as Monistat to treat this common pregnancy condition.
You need to understand, though, that there are times when a discharge accompanied by a burning or itchy feeling could be something else that requires a completely different type of treatment. So it is important that you visit with your doctor about your symptoms before discounting them as simply a yeast infection.
Clear Fluid
You should really be take note of this type of discharge during pregnancy since there is a possibility that it could be amniotic fluid especially if it turns up in the last part of your pregnancy. This could POSSIBLY be a sign of a leak in your amniotic sack (the sack of water which holds your baby). If this is the case, you need to seek medical attention right away.
Fortunately when this clear, pinkish discharge during pregnancy occurs it isnt amniotic fluid, but instead, it is just a little urine. As humiliating as that might be, we are pregnant and yes, disgusting things happen, like urinating on yourself!
Call your doctor, however, if you see these signs, then you should head for the ER:
*If you see any blood mixed in with the discharge
*Regular contractions or pain with the discharge
A normal discharge during pregnancy is usually a white, milky color and is about the consistency of lotion. Anything other than this is a good reason to talk with your doctor.
